Bahrain was under Portuguese control from 1522 to 1602. Later, Persians occupied it, but they were forced out in 1782, or 1783, by the present ruler’s family Khalifa. By the 1800’s, some European nations were trying to colonize Bahrain. With the first contact in 1805, the Great Britain managed to get the strongest influence, and, in 1820, the first treaty between Bahrain and Britain was signed. In addition, the treaty of protection was signed in 1861 and revised in 1892. Under this treaty, Britain controlled foreign affairs and defense of Bahrain although the country resumed being independent.
