Bahrain: Timeline of Ruling Powers

4th century CE: under the rule of Persian Sassanid Empire.

8th century CE: the Abbasids’ rule.

1521: Portuguese rule.

1602: Persians’ rule.

1783: Ahmad ibn al-Khalifah’s rule. The al-Khalifah family has been ruling till present days.

1861: Bahrain became British protectorate. Britain got responsibility for external affairs, defense, and trade.

1961: Sheik Isa ibn Sulman al-Khalifah became emir.

August 14, 1971: Independence from Britain.

1999: Sheik Hamad ibn Isa A-Khalifah’s rule.
